Biography
Ben Jeffery – Driven
Background
Born in 1986, Ben Jeffery grew up in Barnet, North London, where his passion for art began at an early age. His grandfather introduced him to the work of renowned 18th-century watercolour artist John Varley, a relative of the Jeffery family, inspiring Ben to pursue his own creative path.
At secondary school, Ben discovered that art was more than a hobby. He and his classmates regularly challenged each other to draw portraits, and he loved seeing people’s reactions to his work. His talent became clear when he painted a portrait of his father for a mock GCSE project, earning admiration from both his classmates and teachers.
Developing His Own Style
Ben studied Art through college and university, but he developed his distinctive painting techniques largely through experimentation. Rather than relying on formal instruction, he explored different methods himself and refined his skills through practice.
Although some tutors encouraged a more conceptual approach, Ben remained passionate about detailed oil paintings filled with vibrant colour. Consequently, he experimented with brushwork, texture and paint application until he created the expressive style that collectors recognise today.
Creative Process
Every Ben Jeffery painting begins with a strong composition, but the artwork often evolves naturally as he works. Sometimes he starts with a clear vision, while at other times the painting develops through instinct and experimentation.
He first covers the canvas with base colours before allowing the paint to dry. He then builds successive layers, gradually introducing texture, atmosphere and fine detail. Finally, he leaves each completed painting for a day before reviewing it with fresh eyes and making any final adjustments.
Inspiration and Influences
Ben draws inspiration from many different sources. The stunning landscapes of Herefordshire and the Isle of Harris frequently influence his work, while vintage photography, classic cinema and nostalgic imagery also shape many of his compositions.
In addition, Ben has a lifelong love of science fiction films and concept art. Although he once considered a career designing artwork for films and video games, he ultimately chose traditional painting because of its richness, texture and emotional depth.
A Distinctive Contemporary Artist
Today, Ben Jeffery creates artwork that blends realism with nostalgia, cinematic atmosphere and contemporary style. His portfolio ranges from expressive portraits to dramatic landscapes, vintage transport and iconic cultural subjects. By combining exceptional technical skill with imaginative storytelling, he produces highly collectable limited editions that continue to attract collectors throughout the UK and beyond.
