Billy the Artist (BTA), born William Theodore Johann Miller on December 15, 1964, in Chicago, IL, was an American artist and writer based in Manhattan’s East Village. He rose to prominence by creating ceiling murals for the musical RENT. Additionally, he contributed to the Cow Parade public art project, including Moo York Celebration, and extended his art to various cities’ projects. The East Village served as his longtime canvas.
Early Life
William Theodore Johann Miller, born on December 15, 1964, in Chicago, IL, was the son of William F. Miller, an accomplished journalist and photographer who garnered awards while working at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Marianne Miller, a social work professional. His formative years were spent in Cleveland, where he enrolled at the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987.
Career
Miller’s childhood dream of becoming a Broadway actor led him to New York City’s street art scene in the 1980s. Encouraged by his artist neighbor Lynn Marropody, he ventured into creating his art, eventually abandoning acting. Gaining recognition as “Billy the Artist,” his work was showcased at Bull McCabe’s saloon in the East Village.
After graduating from the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music in 1987, Miller performed in Chicago for two years. Subsequently, he relocated to New York City, securing his first Broadway audition role in the play “Down to Earth,” which unfortunately never premiered due to financial issues. He also featured in other productions, including the 20th-anniversary Broadway tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, an off-Broadway production of Man of La Mancha, and received acclaim for major roles at Cincinnati Playhouse and Birmingham Theater.
In 1995, Miller’s true passion shifted to art, leading him to focus on painting for the rest of his life. He participated in several group exhibitions, including one in SoHo alongside renowned artists like KAWS, Ron English, and Anthony Freda, as well as another with Ryan McGinley and CRASH.
One of his initial artistic endeavors was creating murals and designing original t-shirts for the Broadway musical RENT.
Global Recognition
Following the success of RENT, Miller’s art gained international recognition from brands and clients such as Swatch, Viacom, Lamborghini, New Balance Shoes, among others. He also collaborated with Goebel, a European company, to develop a line of new Billy The Artist products, showcased at the Maison et Objet trade show in Paris prior to the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Miller’s paintings graced prestigious galleries, including the Forbes Gallery in New York, as well as galleries in cities like Chicago, Miami, Orlando, New Orleans, Austin, Cleveland, Mexico City, Hamburg, Paris, Curacao, and Zurich, among others. His works appeared in various global publications, including Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Elle, US Weekly, Juxtapoz, Entertainment Weekly, and The New York Times. Miller also made appearances on major television networks such as MTV, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX, and TLC, and was featured on 60 Minutes and other global feature programs.
Notably, Miller became one of the first American artists permitted to paint on The Bund in Shanghai.
Death
Tragically, Miller passed away on January 22, 2022, due to complications from colon cancer.
In March 2022, The Fine Arts Association in Willoughby paid tribute to Miller by featuring his work in its Ten Below: One Act Festival.
