Iain Faulkner’s art seamlessly captures calm and contemplative moments, encapsulated in contrasts between light and dark. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Iain Faulkner decided to stray away from the abstract and contemporary art movements of the time. Iain Faulkner prints reflect this artist’s slavish attention to detail.
Iain Faulkner graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1996, earning a BA (Honours) Degree in Fine Art. It was here that Faulkner honed his skills, working had to replicate the real world, from figurative to architectural pieces. There’s a meticulous style of painting within this collection, showing a level of draughtsmanship while being able to convey sensitivity and personality.
The level of detail of each painting is quite humbling, and can stand up to close scrutiny. The structured lines of glasses, tables and cars are exacting. The replication of nature too is breathtaking; the hazy light of the sun bursts through windows, or dances on the water of a dazzling beach front. And above all this, it is the human subjects that draw your attention. The story unfolds in front of your eyes, from the smoky atmosphere of departed guests in Poker Night, to the tantalising promise of Romantic Lunch.
A male character, most of the time with his back turned to us, is frequently seen in the works of Iain Faulkner. This man is, strictly speaking, Iain Faulkner himself. But it’s not quite as it appears. Rather, it is Iain Faulkner as an actor, playing the character that we see in many of his paintings. He cuts a very solitary figure, often alone and contemplative. Indeed in one of the works titled ‘Romantic Lunch’ – the body language on the surface would indicate an interest in the lady, but look closer and somehow he looks even lonelier than usual. His eyes seem empty and emotionless as the lady on the other side of the table pulls at his tie and puts her hand on top of his. Her dominant stance doesn’t seem to be having an effect on this withdrawn individual.
Of course, all these things are open to interpretation. Much of Faulkner’s work is left for open narrative to be weaved around the painting and to interpret for yourself.
Faulkner uses light and dark in an incredibly strong way, making a visual impact as soon as you see a painting. After the powerful first impression, layers begin to unravel about the story behind what you’re seeing. There is a stillness in most of his works, as though time has stopped forever, allowing both subject and observer to be contemplative and submerged in inner reflection.
