Biography
Jeremy Barlow – Facade, La Roque D’Antheron
Early Life and Education
– Jeremy Barlow – Celebrated British Landscape Artist
Jeremy Barlow (1945–2020) was one of the UK’s most distinguished landscape painters. He studied illustration at Northampton School of Art, and afterwards began a career in London and the Midlands. However, his passion for painting soon grew stronger than his commercial work. Inspired by British landscape artist Stanley Orchart, he developed his own distinctive style. As a result, Barlow moved away from illustration and focused on fine art.
Artistic Career and Travels
From the beginning, travel played a major role in Jeremy Barlow’s career. He explored France, Italy, and Spain, and each country influenced his vision. Moreover, the radiant skies and lively town squares of the Mediterranean inspired some of his best-loved works. In these paintings, light and shadow play against each other, while perspective draws the viewer deep into the scene.
In 1977, Barlow moved to Germany. During this period, he concentrated on German, French, Belgian, and Dutch townscapes. After six productive years abroad, he returned to England in 1983. From then on, he exhibited widely across the UK and Europe. In addition, his work attracted attention from galleries in the USA.
Prestigious Awards and Recognition
Jeremy Barlow received many honours throughout his career. In 2008, he was awarded a fellowship by the San Ei Gen Foundation, which encourages cultural exchange between the UK and Japan. Thanks to this award, he spent valuable time painting and studying in Japan. Consequently, he expanded his subject matter beyond Europe, interpreting unfamiliar landscapes and ancient traditions with fresh eyes.
Furthermore, Barlow’s paintings appeared in many important venues. These included the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, and the Royal Society of British Artists. He also held more than 200 solo exhibitions in the UK, Europe, and America.
Memberships and Awards
Jeremy Barlow was an elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI). Between 1995 and 1999, he served on the ROI council. In addition, he won several prestigious prizes:
Stanley Grimm Prize – 1994 and 2000
Alan Gourlay Memorial Prize – 1999 (Annual ROI Exhibition, Mall Galleries)
As a result of his long career, his work is now represented in public, private, and corporate collections worldwide.
Legacy
Finally, Jeremy Barlow’s career left a lasting impact on the art world. He passed away suddenly but peacefully on 26 November 2020 at his home in North Norfolk. Nevertheless, his legacy continues through his timeless paintings, which remain sought after by collectors and admired in galleries worldwide.
