Jimmy Law is a contemporary artist, painter, and sculptor based in Cape Town, South Africa. He specialises in portraiture, figurative work, nudes, and sculpture. His distinctive style blends realism with expressive abstraction.

Early Creative Journey

From childhood, Jimmy was always drawing. As a teenager and young adult, he continued illustrating and creating. After finishing school, he studied graphic design. Every business he started included a strong creative element.

He designed and printed clothing, customised vehicles, made surfboards, and illustrated comic books. But it wasn’t until he turned 35 that painting became a serious focus.

Discovering Oil Paint

Jimmy began with acrylics, drawn to their quick drying time. Later, a fellow artist introduced him to oil paints. This changed everything. He started developing new techniques and grew more confident with each piece.

Over time, he fell in love with the richness of oil paint. He began exploring a wider range of subjects and styles.

Breaking Free from Precision

His background in graphic design meant his early paintings were tight and controlled. But Jimmy longed for freedom and expression in his art.

One night, he realised his brush choices were holding him back. He was using small brushes for detailed work. He set them aside and forced himself to paint only with large brushes.

The process was frustrating, but it led to a breakthrough. His style started to shift—becoming looser, bolder, and more expressive.

A Focus on Faces

Jimmy has always been fascinated by the human face. For him, it reveals identity and emotion.

He began painting famous faces—movie characters and celebrities—using only grayscale. This new approach marked the beginning of his professional career as a full-time artist.

Evolving the Style

As confidence grew, Jimmy pushed further. He embraced colour, created larger pieces, and explored artistic nudes. He experimented with new tools and materials.

Eventually, he discovered a tool that produced strokes similar to a palette knife. This gave birth to his signature style—a mix of realism, abstraction, and design.

The Astronaut Series

During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Jimmy began painting astronauts. These pieces were more conceptual, often featuring surreal pairings—astronauts with animals or elements of nature.

He believes the global mood of isolation and uncertainty influenced this shift in his work.

Entering the World of Sculpture

In 2022, Jimmy expanded into sculpture. He created his first bronze piece based on one of his astronaut paintings.

Working in 3D was a new challenge—but one that offered a fresh perspective. He now plans to create more sculptures alongside his painting.

Continuing the Creative Journey

Jimmy Law continues to grow as an artist. He constantly explores new materials, techniques, and styles. His work invites viewers to see familiar subjects in fresh, thought-provoking ways.
