Early Life and Artistic Influence

Essex-born artist John Horsewell developed a love for art at an early age. Creativity surrounded him while growing up, as both his parents and grandfather were professional artists.

Therefore, it was natural that Horsewell would follow a similar path. During his school years he experimented with many artistic media. However, he soon discovered that oil paint suited his style best.

Oils allowed him to capture the subtle effects of light, shadow, and atmosphere that remain central to his work today.

From Interior Design to Full-Time Artist

After leaving school, Horsewell initially entered the interior design industry. Nevertheless, he continued to paint in his spare time.

As his confidence grew, he began exhibiting his work locally. Soon afterwards his reputation expanded beyond his home area. Consequently, his paintings appeared in exhibitions across Manchester, Birmingham, and London.

In 1978, Horsewell made the decision to pursue painting as a full-time profession. Since then, he has enjoyed considerable success and recognition as a professional artist.

Landscapes Inspired by Travel

Horsewell often paints landscapes from locations that have inspired him personally.

For example, many of his works capture the dramatic vistas of Southern Europe. Meanwhile, other paintings reflect the peaceful coastal scenery of Florida, where he spends much of his time.

Horsewell paints using both brushes and palette knives. As a result, his artworks feature rich texture and expressive mark-making.
