Biography

Josie Appleby – Two Chasing Pheasants

Early Life and Education

Josie Appleby is a contemporary British artist born in London in 1991. She studied at Watford Grammar School for Girls before attending the prestigious Instituto Marangoni, one of Europe’s leading fashion schools. During her studies, she secured an internship with the renowned British luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen, highlighting her early creative talent.

Artistic Journey and Influences

From a young age, Josie found comfort and inspiration in the company of horses. Alongside this, she developed her artistic skills through portrait commissions, gaining recognition within the equestrian community.

While studying equine sports science, Josie deepened her understanding of horse anatomy through detailed study and drawing. As a result, she combines both scientific knowledge and emotional connection in her work. This unique blend allows her to portray horses with authenticity, sensitivity, and expressive depth.

Style and Subject Matter

Josie Appleby specialises in equestrian and figurative oil paintings that explore the relationship between strength and vulnerability. She creates atmospheric compositions that capture movement, emotion, and the spirit of her subjects.

Moreover, her work reflects a strong influence from Impressionist masters such as Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, and Vincent van Gogh. Inspired by their techniques, she uses bold brushstrokes, layered textures, and vibrant colour palettes. Consequently, her paintings achieve a dynamic balance between traditional and contemporary styles.

Philosophy and Inspiration

Josie’s work centres on emotion, memory, and hope. She draws inspiration from personal experiences, allowing her art to evolve alongside her life. As she explains, moments of joy, despair, and reflection all contribute to her creative process.

She believes that art holds the power to capture something intangible—an emotional connection that resonates beyond words. Therefore, each painting becomes a visual expression of hope, inviting the viewer to interpret and connect with the work on a personal level.
