Biography

Julia Whitehead – Layers of Society

Early Life and Education

Julia Whitehead is a contemporary British artist born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, in 1969. She studied Illustration and Printmaking in Cambridge, where she developed a strong foundation in composition, colour, and visual storytelling.

Artistic Inspiration

Julia draws inspiration from two contrasting worlds: the energy of urban crowds and the tranquillity of rural wildlife. On one hand, she explores the movement and patterns created by people in busy city environments. On the other, she finds calm and inspiration in the natural landscape surrounding her home.

She is particularly fascinated by the shadows cast by human figures when viewed from above. By studying aerial perspectives, she captures fleeting moments and transforms them into striking compositions. As a result, her work encourages viewers to notice the overlooked beauty of everyday life.

Life and Environment

Julia lives and works in a small village in South Lincolnshire, where her garden studio overlooks open countryside. This peaceful setting provides constant inspiration, from wildlife and woodland to farmland and open skies. Consequently, her rural surroundings balance the energy found in her urban-themed pieces.

Style and Technique

Julia Whitehead works primarily in acrylic on canvas. She begins each piece with a vibrant abstract background, layering bold colours to create depth and movement. She then builds her compositions on top, allowing elements of the underlying layers to remain visible.

This technique gives her work a distinctive sense of texture and rhythm. Whether she paints crowds in motion or grasses swaying in the breeze, Julia captures patterns and movement with a confident, contemporary style.
