Biography

Set the World Alight

In the early 1990s, Mackenzie Thorpe set the art world alight — and that flame still burns brightly today. He became a global art phenomenon whose work reaches across every boundary. His art speaks to the universal themes that unite us all: love and isolation, life and death, joy and sorrow, despair and hope.

HM Queen Elizabeth II

Mackenzie Thorpe transformed the face of art publishing in the UK. His bold vision created one of the most recognisable and celebrated bodies of work in contemporary art. Among his collectors are author J.K. Rowling and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. His original paintings, editions and sculptures appear in private and corporate collections around the world.

Collectors come from every walk of life — including well-known figures from sport, music, film, politics and royalty. His prestigious commissions include pieces for The Andre Agassi FoundationThe Elton John AIDS FoundationPrincess Anne, and William Hague.

Background

From a dyslexic child ostracised by his peers to an international artist with worldwide exhibitions, Mackenzie’s journey is extraordinary and inspiring. He was born into a working-class family in Middlesbrough and struggled through school with an undiagnosed learning difficulty. By the age of fifteen, he was doing manual work in the local shipyard. Yet with determination, originality and sheer passion, Mackenzie defied expectations and built a career that continues to inspire new generations.

Inspiration

A film about Vincent van Gogh first sparked Mackenzie’s dream of becoming an artist. That dream soon became a plan. His portfolio earned him a place at art college, where he later completed a fine-art degree in London. Married with a young family, he taught art before moving to Richmond, where he and his wife opened an art materials shop.

He began displaying his paintings in the shop window, changing them often. People started to notice. As his paintings sold, word spread quickly. Soon, Mackenzie had a British manager and an American publisher supporting him. His art appeared on calendars and greetings cards, and demand grew rapidly. The unstoppable force that is Mackenzie Thorpe had truly stepped into the light.
