Biography

Steven McLoughlin – Into The Woods – Canvas
About the Artist

Born in Derbyshire in 1970, Steven McLoughlin is a self-taught British landscape artist who paints with passion and precision. From an early age, he felt drawn to the countryside and spent countless hours observing the natural world around him. Those early experiences inspired his lifelong love of painting and his deep appreciation for light, colour and movement.

Over time, Steven built a successful career working for art publishers and private clients. This period allowed him to refine his technical skills and gain valuable professional experience. However, as his artistic vision evolved, he decided to focus entirely on the subjects that truly move him — the British landscape in all its seasonal moods.

Artistic Style and Inspiration

Steven paints to express atmosphere and emotion. He uses light, shadow and colour to tell a story and create a connection with the viewer. As his two sons have grown older, he has become increasingly inspired by the relationship between people and nature. Because of this, many of his recent paintings include gentle narrative touches that invite you to imagine yourself within the scene.

His artwork has appeared at the Mall Galleries in London and in numerous exhibitions across Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Norfolk and the Cotswolds. Through each new collection, Steven continues to explore how weather, light and time transform the landscape.

Technique and Process

Working mainly in mixed media, Steven often begins his paintings outdoors, capturing the immediate feel of a place before completing each piece in his Derbyshire studio. He prefers to build up the image gradually, using a glazing technique that layers thin, translucent washes of paint. Consequently, every artwork gains remarkable depth, texture and luminosity.

By combining field observation with studio refinement, Steven achieves paintings that radiate warmth and tranquillity. Each canvas reflects his enduring fascination with the beauty of the British countryside and his desire to share that connection with others.

What is a Giclée Print?

A giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) is a fine art print made with advanced inkjet technology. The word comes from the French term gicler, meaning “to spray,” which describes how the ink is applied.

Unlike standard prints, giclées use pigment-based inks on acid-free paper or canvas, producing rich colours, fine detail, and smooth tonal transitions. This method ensures the print looks remarkably close to the original painting.

Because giclée prints use archival materials, they resist fading and maintain their brilliance for many years. This makes them a favourite among galleries, collectors, and art enthusiasts who appreciate high-quality reproductions at a more accessible price.
