John Russell – Living on a farm in the north of England, Scottish artist John Russell is inspired by the rural landscape in which he lives. John creates paintings from the familiar scenes around him and also those he has experienced from places he has visited all over Britain from Highland crofts to Cornish mines. The paintings are often composed of vast dark skies which he contrasts with highly textured foregrounds. Despite this remote subject matter, the strip of lighting John applies to the foreground offers a contrasting comforting glow. John combines traditional subject matter with a contemporary, fresh approach creating paintings which are becoming more and more sought after.
