Jeremy Barlow – Celebrated British Landscape Artist
Early Life and Education
Jeremy Barlow (1945–2020) was one of the UK’s most distinguished landscape painters, admired for his ability to capture light, atmosphere, and perspective. He studied illustration at Northampton School of Art before beginning a successful career in London and the Midlands. Inspired by British landscape artist Stanley Orchart, Barlow gradually developed his own distinctive painting style.
Artistic Career and Travels
An avid traveller, Jeremy Barlow found endless inspiration in the Mediterranean. He painted extensively in France, Italy, and Spain, where the radiant skies, sunlit town squares, and shady side streets became recurring subjects. His works are instantly recognisable for their dramatic use of light and shadow, as well as their strong sense of perspective that draws the viewer into each scene.
In 1977, Barlow moved to Germany and spent six years painting German, French, Belgian, and Dutch landscapes and townscapes. He returned to England in 1983, continuing to exhibit widely across the UK and internationally.
Prestigious Awards and Recognition
In 2008, Jeremy Barlow was awarded a fellowship by the San Ei Gen Foundation, an institution dedicated to cultural exchange between the UK and Japan. This opportunity allowed him to live and paint in Japan, immersing himself in its unfamiliar landscapes and ancient traditions.
Over the course of his career, Barlow’s work was exhibited at major venues such as the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, and the Royal Society of British Artists. He also held over 200 successful solo exhibitions in the UK, Europe, and the USA.
Memberships and Awards
Jeremy Barlow was an elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), serving as a council member from 1995 to 1999. His accolades include:
Stanley Grimm Prize – 1994 and 2000
Alan Gourlay Memorial Prize – 1999 (Annual ROI Exhibition, Mall Galleries)
His work is represented in public, private, and corporate collections worldwide.
