Biography

De Rosa – Mini Owl II

Handcrafted Ceramics

De Rosa Collections proudly boasts a heritage spanning fifty years. In 1945, Jorge De Rosa Thompson drew inspiration from the craft of ceramic design. Today, his son Jorge De Rosa Jr. and daughter Agustina De Rosa actively lead this family-run business, ensuring the production of timeless handmade ceramic figurines that constantly evolve and reinvent ceramic design, incorporating bright colors, original art forms, and textures.

Artisans and craftsmen design these unique ceramic works of art. Their skilled carving technique guarantees the originality of each piece, as no two are ever carved exactly alike.

Hand-painters deftly apply vibrant enamel glazes, gold, and platinum using special brushes, enhancing the individual character of De Rosa Collection figurines.

These brightly colored gems in the realm of hand-crafted ceramic design are exclusively crafted in our workshop located in Canelones, Uruguay, South America.

THE PROCESS

Master Design

Artisans and craftsmen from Uruguay design one-of-a-kind ceramic works of art for De Rosa Collections.

Expert hands skillfully create each new product under the watchful supervision of the De Rosa family.

Molding Process

Once they approve a Master Design, the process proceeds to creating a mold. We pour liquid ceramic into it, and when the figurine’s form reaches a semi-dry state, we remove it from the mold. Initially smooth, it requires hand-carving before the moist ceramic hardens, ensuring the addition of texture, detail, and personality.

Extraction

We remove the figurine’s form from the mold when it’s semi-dry. At this stage, it’s still quite smooth and requires hand-carving before the moist ceramic hardens, making it challenging to add texture, detail, and personality.

Hand Carving

Skilled artisans individually hand-carve each figurine, ensuring that no two subjects are ever carved exactly alike. After completing the carving, the figurine is ready for its first kiln firing.

Hand Painting

Our skilled artisans take over the hand-painting phase, meticulously crafting each figurine using a colorful variety of ceramic slips and vibrant enamel glazes. Following this step, each figurine undergoes another round of firing in the kiln.

Gold and Platinum Application

The final step involves artisans applying gold and platinum. These precious metals not only accentuate the figurines’ personality but also transform the Collection into the brightly colored jewels of the hand-crafted ceramic design world.
